Understanding and Configuring Campus Network Technologies

"I'm not an isolated person. The more I connect to people, the more I have the feeling that things work."
– Raf Simons

We discussed the various elements of the enterprise network in the previous chapter. In this chapter, we will delve deep into the campus network, and the various technologies used in the campus network. A list of the topics discussed in this chapter are as follows:

  • Layer 2 technologies used in the campus network, including Ethernet, Spanning Tree protocol, link aggregation, and their configuration
  • Various layer 3 technologies used in the campus network, including first hop redundancy protocols and routing protocols
  • Configuration guidelines for the various layer 2 and layer 3 technologies
  • Campus design considerations

We will adopt a use case approach in the document, and take a sample enterprise as an example to discuss the considerations for designing the network and the protocols and technologies to use.

Before delving into the specifics of configuration, we will describe the various technologies and their working in brief so that the user can comprehend how to use the features on the network.
